SERMON OUTLINE
- Introduction
- What is your source of truth?
- Big Idea: We Should Follow God’s Word as Truth
- Scripture is God's Word
- 2 Tim. 3:16 “All Scripture is inspired by God”
- Greek for "inspired" is theopneustos meaning “God breathed”
- God’s voice will never contradict God’s Word
- The Holy Spirit will never contradict God’s Word
- Jesus Followed the Scriptures
- Example: Jesus in quoting Scripture when tempted (Matthew 4)
- Example: Jesus reading from the scroll of Isaiah (Luke 4)
- Example: Jesus teaching on marriage and divorce (Matthew 19)
- Example: Jesus quoting Psalm 22 on the cross (Matthew 27:46)
- Scripture is useful to show us how to be saved
- 2 Timothy 3:15 and you know that from infancy you have known the sacred Scriptures, which are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
- The OT pointed forward to salvation in Christ and the NT reveals salvation in Christ (Luke 24:44-45)
- Look for Jesus in the Scriptures
- Scripture is useful to make us spiritually mature
- 2 Timothy 3:16-17 is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
- The goal of discipleship is spiritual maturity in Christ
- Scripture shows us where we are out of alignment with God's will and where we are in alignment
- Our lives should be steeped in the Word (transformed through a process of study and reflection)
- Applications
- Study the Word
- Read contextually (according to genre and literary devices)
- Read prayerfully (to be TRANSFORMED, not just INFORMED)
- Teach the Scriptures (correct with gentleness and patience - 2 Timothy 2:24-25)
- Stand firm in Scripture (against the lies of the Enemy)
- Conclusion - Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path.
